Patron Process at SJF
Starting in 2007, Sacred Journey started selecting an annual congregational patron. This was a process we borrowed from Gaia Community, a sister UU congregation in Kansas - and they got the idea from an ancient Egyptan concept of a "God Auction", whereby temples of a city would collect donations of food and goods to discern who would be the patron of the city. That temple (and its deity) was then given a place of prominence for the coming year, as well as having additional responsibilities to distribute that wealth and food to the needy. We adapted it a bit to better fit our community and this is how it works:
1. We start with three weeks of nominations. To be eligble to be put forward, the nominee can be a diety, principle or even a historical or fiction figure. However past Patrons, or finalists from the previous year can't be re-nominated. Nominations usually begin at the end of our Annual Meeting in late May.
2. Once we've gathered nominations, a penny auction is held to narrow a field of candidates down to the final three contenders; only U.S. coins are accepted for this "pre-selection", but any denomination is acceptable.
3. The actual Patron auction takes place on a Saturday evening in late August, with Sacred Journey ritualists representing/aspecting the three candidates, who answer questions. Several rounds of questions take place, with an opportunity to make donations after each question (tiebreaker rounds are possible if time permits and the outcome is close.) A dollar counts as a point, so does a non-perishable food item. The finalist with the highest point total at the end of the evening is the new Sacred Journey Patron!
The new Patron is installed during the first Sunday service in September, and that choice influences programming choices, Social Acton projects and other congregational activities through-out the coming church year.
