Kali: PVUUC Patron for 2007-8At Sunday's Patron Auction, the Hindu Goddess, Kali was chosen as our Patron for the coming church year (starting September 1st.) We'd like to thank David Minesinger, Aine Aldrich, Meagan, Bob Anderson and David Pollard who put together the auction, as well as the people who showed up to bid. There were over 300 items of food donated to the New Beginning Center from the event, and we raised $456 for PVUUC. The first church service about our new Patron will be on September 9th. A bit about Kali She wears a garland of 51 heads, which represents the Varnamala, or the Garland of Letters. This represents the 51 letters of the Sanskrit alphabet. Therefore she is generally seen as the mother of language, and all mantras. She is also accompanied by serpents and a jackal while standing on a seemingly dead Shiva, usually right foot forward to symbolize the right-handed path, as opposed to the more infamous left-handed path. In spite of her seemingly terrible form, Kali is often considered the kindest and most loving of all the Hindu goddesses, as she is regarded by her devotees as the Mother of the whole Universe. And, because of her terrible form she is also often seen as a great protector. |
